Harley finally launched its brand in India at the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturer’s annual convention held on August 28. Harley was close to seal off the deal in 2007 but it backed off as it couldn’t cut a deal with the Government regarding import duty. Even now nothing has changed; Harley’s motorcycles will bear the same import duty like other CBUs.
As most of us know, Harley-Davidson is not just a motorcycle maker, but it is a “way of life”. This can be said only about the Harley. But this way of life sadly won’t be feasible for most of us, since the import taxes will elevate the price range to about Rs. 12-14 lakhs but you won’t remember it over the gut ripping music it composes.
The motorcycles will be available for sale in 2010. Initially Harley will be launching 4 models which include the Fat Boy, Night Rod Special, the 883cc sportster and a customized model currently named as Legend Harley. But we reckon, since all the models are going to be CBUs Harley will soon serve its entire menu on order.
The company has set up a subsidiary in Gurgaon, near Delhi, Which will be under the management of Mr.Anoop prakash. According to him the company has begun the process of identifying initial dealers in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Punjab State. If you want to be one, you can register at Harley’s Indian website.
