Yamaha is the bike manufacturer which introduced performance biking to our country, with its RD 350s (which BTW is the most hardcore bike to have ever been launched in India). Back in the old times a bike from Yamaha was more than a mode of transport. When Rx 100 was introduced it was the coolest thing on road. Youngsters loved it and their parents feared it. It was conceived dangerous for its cobra strike like pick up. It had the rebel factor which made it an Icon. Those were the glorious era of 2-strokes.
After the Government banning 2-stroke engines because of the pollution factor, Yamaha had a tough time in India. Yamaha struggled to bring back the magic to the badge. The bikes Yamaha launched at that time were utter failures. Considering its capability it felt like Yamaha had abandoned India.
Fortunately, Yamaha did have a plan for India. The launch of YZF R-15 and FZ-16 has made it clear that Yamaha is back. The company has again become the most interesting bike manufacture in the country. The introduction of these two Yamahas has increased its sale by 83% compared to last year. The build quality of these bikes is in Japanese terms.
Yamaha has finally been able to work out an import plan with the Indian government. It is currently importing two of its world renowned superbikes R1 and MT01. The bikes are sold at 12lakhs due to the huge 100% import tax. Yamaha isn’t looking to sell R1s by the thousands; the launch is merely a showcase of its technical potency and brand promotion.
