The fastest bike in India with a top speed of 144kmph is the new pulsar 220 priced at a bargain of Rs 70,000. Does anything else really matter? For people who think otherwise read through.

The old pulsar 220 had fuel injection, which made it more expensive. It was priced at a mammoth 91,000. Which was far more expensive than the costliest bike in the Indian market, karizma. Now Bajaj has thrown out the fuel injection and replaced it with a carburetor. Smart move I would say. Its cuts cost but does this move affect the mileage? No it doesn’t you can expect well over 35kmpl , some might thing that’s not good enough , well we are talking about a 220cc bike which flies at 144kmph.

The technical brilliance of the pulsar 220 is in fact too technical, some might want to skip this snippet. A new combustion chamber has been given to the 220 with all new port geometry for optimized thermodynamics. Valves have been coated with a special material to eliminate carbon formation. It gets a newly designed short skirt for lowering piston friction and an all new camshaft. It also get a 1/3 increase in the size of oil coolers. The intake port in the cylinder head has been modified, along with higher lift and duration cam. A larger resonator and catalytic convertor are also used to increase performance. It also uses temperature based ignition mapping system through which the ignition timing is optimized to achieve good startability, quick warm up and outstanding torque. Didn’t I tell you?

The top speed is attributed to the new 32 venturi carburetor (the biggest ever to be used in India). This is also responsible for the increase in acceleration. But besides all the technical advancements the new 220 feels somewhat old school, now that’s a good thing.

[...] a 220cc engine or a P220 with the standard Pulsar doom. The 220 S costs about 3 grand less than the normal P220 at an on-road price of Rs. 78,000. Frankly I don’t see any takers for this one, may be if they [...]
